I’ve been watching a lot of Mad Men lately (you know, on account of my being unemployed and all) and I’m loving it…a lot…probably a little too much. I’ve developed a little bit of an obsession with certain aspects/characters of the show, which I’m going to list below: (Note: As of right now I’m on Season 3, Episode 5)
1. Sterling Cooper
Everything that goes on within the company is completely fascinating to me. The advertising industry, the way they dress, the way the act, the way they talk, how they have no set hours, etc, etc. I mean, this is their life and they’re all so good at what they do. Am I ever going to be that good at my job? I wanna work for Sterling Cooper, dammit!
2. Peggy Olson
Peggy is pretty much my favorite character. I want everything good to come her way. She’s made some poor decisions in the past, but she knows what she wants, and that’s something I look up to. Plus, I’m sure she’ll redeem herself soon enough. I’m also pretty obsessed with her relationship with Peter. The little glances they give each other, the way Peter talks to Peggy when he’s in a good mood, the way they so obviously love each other but can do nothing about it. I’m overall curious to know what Mad Men fans think of these two. Do people generally like Peggy as a character? Do people want Peter and Peggy to end up together? If you can answer these questions…by all means feel free to send me a message. Although I do have a feeling about the sexual tension between her and Don…hmmm, I wonder.
3. Salvatore Romano
Holy crap, guys. This is where Mad Men gets good. Sal is a closeted gay man who has a wife in order to hide his sexuality. Every time an episode focuses on Sal, I get all excited because I yearn to know more about him. One of the most fascinating things about Sal is that he’s so obviously feminine in his ways, yet no one at Sterling Cooper (or anywhere else) seems to notice and the fact that all of this takes place in the 60s definitely plays a big role in that. My three favorite Sal moments thus far definitely have to be (spoiler alert): 1. When Don finds out he’s gay. - I love that after being in a little bit of a shock, he seems to be completely okay with it. 2. The moment when his wife realizes that there’s something going on. 3. The Kenny Rogers/Sal & wife dinner.
4. Betty Draper
Poor Betty…Lives the most boring life possible with an unfaithful husband. I root for her when other men hit on her hoping that she gets Don back for all the crap!
5. Don Draper
I don’t even know where to start with this man. I hate him with every ounce of my being and yet love him with a passion that consumes my heart. He is a cheating, lying bastard and the kindest man in the world. I want to slap him and kiss him. I mean, what is going on inside this man’s mind? His whole life is technically a lie and just when I think he’s doing better with the having-sex-with-every-woman-that-comes-his-way thing, he does it again. And yet he keeps Peggy’s secret, keeps Sal’s secret, never lays a hand on his children, takes Betty’s dad in, let’s Roger know what’s up whenever he needs a butt-kickin’, etc, etc. I’m in a love hate relationship with Don Draper.
Mad Men is a good show, y’all!
